Frequent Crashes When Ripping MP3s on XP

Giac,

If I take a factory-produced CD and use my Windows ME computer to rip it and create WAVs or MP3s, everything works fine.

When I rip the same CD on my Windows XP computer into WAV files, it also works fine. However, when I try to rip the CD to create MP3 files on my Windows XP computer, my entire computer almost always crashes during the encoding phase, which I think is when Virtuosa calls the LAME encoder.

I think I have the latest version of the LAME encoder. When it crashes, there is no error message at all. It is as if the power was turned off suddenly.

Is there something I can do to turn on some kind of debug mode that would give you more information you could use to help me figure out what's causing this problem?

I'm using Virtuosa Gold v5.2.

Regards,
Mark Collier

Best,

As I said in my original message, I am already using the latest version of the LAME encoder. I'm using LAME 3.98a4, which was posted just a few days ago. Perhaps I should try rolling back to an earlier (more stable) version.

sorry, I did not get that. I am 99% sure it is your version of Lame that is causing trouble.

yes indeed, roll back. you can simply download the Trial version to get the original one.

Best,

Giac,

Well, I had the same problem with the original LAME encoder that came with the trial version of Virtuosa. That's why I upgraded to the newest version of LAME.

I will try to downgrade to a different version. I'm also going to try running the
LAME encoder outside of Virtuosa to see if I get the same error and perhaps an
error message.

Regards,
Mark

Giac,

Yes, I can confirm the problem is with the LAME encoder.

I installed LAME v3.97b2 and ran it at the command prompt, meaning that
Virtuosa is not involved. The same error occurs, causing my PC to shut down.

I will keep searching for a better version of LAME that does not have this
problem on Windows XP.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,
Mark

Giac,

FYI.

I've tried half a dozen versions of the LAME encoder and I keep having the
same problem. Getting discouraged.....
